Numerical modeling of the effects of restrained boundary conditions on the fire behaviour of steel members / Paul Van der Haert
Titre : Numerical modeling of the effects of restrained boundary conditions on the fire behaviour of steel members Type de document : Travail de fin d'études Auteurs : Paul Van der Haert, Auteur ; Thomas Gernay, ; Sylvie Van Emelen, Editeur : ECAM Année de publication : 2018 Note générale : JOHNS HOPKINS University Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : TFE - Construction Résumé : The fire resistance design of buildings in the United States is based on a prescriptive method. For steel structures, this prescriptive method relies on standardized testing performed on structural elements in furnaces for prescribing the thickness of insulating material. This insulation thickness depends on the required hourly resistance of the element, but also on the support conditions, which are categorized as either Restrained or Unrestrained. It is considered that restraining of a beam ends has a positive effect on the fire performance of the beam and that consequently the insulation thickness can be reduced when compared with the thickness required on the same beam with unrestrained conditions. It is usually the responsibility of the engineer to categorize the element as regards its support conditions in the actual building assembly.
