Study of the energy savings resulting from the renovation of the East Experimental Area / Brieuc Lamaille
Titre : Study of the energy savings resulting from the renovation of the East Experimental Area Type de document : Travail de fin d'études Auteurs : Brieuc Lamaille, Auteur ; Sébastien Evrard, ; Mikaël Dhen Editeur : ECAM Année de publication : 2018 Note générale : C E R N Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : TFE - Electromécanique Résumé : CERN’s East Experimental Area with his four experiments has served physics for more than 40 years. As the building and equipment are reaching their end of life, a thorough consolidation project has been initiated in order to provide many more years of research. Combined with the increasing cost of electricity and a general change of mentality concerning energy consumption, the East Area has been identified as a considerable energy consumer with a high potential for energy savings. Therefore, one of the main objectives of the project is to obtain a higher energy efficiency. The major energy consumers in the experimental hall are the magnets, the water-cooling and ventilation system. Now, the magnets are constantly fed throughout the whole physics run, but soon they will be refurbished. Together with the replacement of the old power converters by new ones with an energy recovery system, which will allow the magnets to be pulsed, their consumption will tremendously be reduced. Consequently, the magnets will have reduced heat losses and thus a lower necessity in water-cooling and ventilation. Associated with the renovation of the building’s envelope, the consumption of ventilation will significantly be reduced. This in-depth study estimates as precisely as possible the future savings, and the possible additional ones. The developed methodologies turn out to be guidelines for another possible future consolidation project at CERN.
