Design study and manufacturing optimization of a self-sizing spiral cuff electrode / Benjamin Verhulst
Titre : Design study and manufacturing optimization of a self-sizing spiral cuff electrode Type de document : Travail de fin d'études Auteurs : Benjamin Verhulst, Auteur ; Pascal Doguet, ; Olivier Cartiaux Editeur : ECAM Année de publication : 2017 Note générale : SYNERGIA MEDICAL Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : TFE - Electromécanique Résumé : Neurostimulation is the artificial stimulation of a nerve or a muscle, aiming the treatment of a number of chronic disorders and to restore impaired vital functions. A neurostimulator is a device composed by a pulse generator, a signal lead, and an electrode. This master's thesis will be focused on the electrode, and its junction with the signal lead. In the context of this thesis, the electrode of the neurostimulator is a self-sizing spiral cuff, which defines an electrode holding electrical contacts snugly against the nerve and is composed of the cuff (i.e. the flexible material that curls on the nerve), the contacts which lead the current flows and the wires connected to the contacts for the connection with the pulse generator. The main advantage of a self-sizing spiral cuff is its ability to expend when the diameter of the nerve changes, after the inflammation reaction when the electrode is surgically placed for example. The stimulation of the nerve is typically obtained by the electric field provided by the generator, but a second purpose of this thesis is to modify the electrode and its lead wires to use an infrared stimulation. It offers serious advantages like a better spatial selectivity of the stimulated. The results will be observed and studied during several experiments. This infrared stimulation, coupled with a specific pulse generator, will be used for further research experiments, which is the final purpose of this thesis.
